A Grand and Glorious Goal

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. —Proverbs 31:10 ESV

The “excellent wife” in Proverbs 31 is perhaps the best-known biblical example of a woman creating a taste of heaven in her home. This woman is servant-hearted and conscientiously cares for the needs of her family and home. Her life shines a spotlight on the God she fears and loves.

My mother embodied this ideal in many ways, as she cared for the seven of us children. The task of planning, managing, and corralling the hubbub of life and ministry in the DeMoss house was not for the fainthearted.

Yet my mother oversaw all this and more with remarkable grace. She served her family and her Savior through her devotion to our home. Countless people found Jesus in that home, having been extended the gracious hospitality and gospel witness my parents offered.

My mother worked hard to create an atmosphere in our home that reflected God’s beauty, His order, and His merciful, welcoming heart. In so doing, she gave our hearts a taste for heaven.
