Destined for Disappointment

March 17, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“Absolute futility,” says the Teacher. “Absolute futility. Everything is futile.” —Ecclesiastes 1:2

If an ultra-wealthy, overachieving ruler like Solomon couldn’t find satisfaction in life, what hope do the rest of us have? Even without the limitations most humans have, Solomon still reached the conclusion that wealth, intelligence, and accomplishment are no guarantee against futility. All who hope to meet their own Solomon-like longings will meet with the same sense of disappointment as he.

But for those in Christ, the story is quite different. They discover, in the words of Puritan pastor John Flavel, that “whatever a soul can desire is found in him [Christ].” 1

Look anywhere else to find perfection, and you will never find it. Look to any other person as a model of flawless loveliness, and you will inevitably be disappointed. Look to anything or anybody to provide unmitigated satisfaction, and while you may see a number of impressive, desirable qualities there, you’ll also see deficiencies that remind you they can never be everything you’ll ever need. But look to Jesus, and He will exceed your highest hopes.
