For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. —Psalm 100:5
As I was growing up, my parents taught me something really important—that God is good. I was given a chance to see whether I really believed that the day I got a phone call saying my dad had suffered a heart attack and was instantly in the presence of God.
In that moment, the Lord did something especially gracious for me: He reminded me of the Truth. Before there was any other conscious thought, before there were any tears, He brought to mind a verse I had read a few days earlier. Paraphrased, it read, “God is good, and everything He does is good” (see Psalm 119:68).
My dad had spent the first twenty-one years of my life teaching me that Truth. Now, at that crucial moment, it proved to be a fortress for my heart. I missed my dad terribly—and still do at times. But I knew then, and I know now, that God is good and everything He does is good.
