[God] changes the times and seasons; he removes kings and establishes kings. —Daniel 2:21
No matter how glorious or inglorious an earthly ruler’s season in the spotlight, no matter how long or how brief their tenure, the sun eventually sets on their rule. Whether people love them, fear them, suffer under them, or all of the above, every person who assumes the power of office will at some point reach the end of their time in that office, either by their resignation or retirement, by a loss at the polls, by a successful coup, or, if nothing else, by their death.
But this rhythm of rising and falling is not just a function of age or political opposition or the fickle cry for change from the voting public. Above it all, across all ages of human history, both past and present, stands a God in heaven who “brings down one and exalts another” (Psalm 75:7).
Earthly rulers only rule because God allows them to rule. And they rule only for as long as He allows them.
