We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. —Romans 8:28
I was moved by a letter Pastor John Piper sent after his diagnosis of prostate cancer. Even someone as biblically sound as he is might not have reacted to that news with godly perspective. His words inspired my heart, reminding us to hold on through this temporary stretch of years we call a lifetime, knowing our heavenly Father is doing all things well.
Dr. Piper said, “The most dangerous thing in the world is the sin of self-reliance and the stupor of worldliness. The news of cancer has a wonderfully blasting effect on both. I thank God for that. . . . God has designed this trial for my good and for your good . . . So I am praying, ‘Lord, for Your great glory, don’t let me miss any of the sanctifying blessings that You have for me in this experience.’” 1
As I read those words I thought, This man believes what he preaches! And he’s living it out in the midst of the furnace.
