“If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and give it to us.” —Numbers 14:8
Instead of focusing on the giants, Joshua and Caleb focused on God. They pointed people to Him. And the things that helped them stand firm in their faith can also help us today.
First, Joshua and Caleb saw the heart of God. They said, “If the Lord is pleased with us.” They knew God loved them and He didn’t bring them to that place to kill them.
Second, they remembered God’s gracious offer. He was taking them—as He is us—into a land of prosperity and abundance. They also remembered God’s promises. How did they know God would take them into the land and give it to them? Because He said He would.
Finally, they remembered God’s presence. “The Lord is with us,” they said in Numbers 14:9. That was their protection, as it is for us today. Yes, there’s going to be a battle, but how can we lose? Therefore, we don’t need to be afraid!
