Book Club: Crazy Busy, Chapter 3

Welcome back to week three of our Summer Book Club! We'll be reading through Crazy Busy by Kevin DeYoung all summer long. There's still plenty of time to grab your copy and join us!

This week, Erin tackles Chapter 3, "The Killer P's." Hear all about it in her vlog below:

In chapter 3 we read, "The problem is not just with our schedules or with the world's complexity. Something is not right with us" (Crazy Busy, p. 34).

Am I trying to do good or am I trying to make myself look good?

What is the problem, exactly? It's our pride, that sense that the world revolves around us (or at least should revolve around us). If you have a pulse, you have a pride problem. And as we read in this chapter, pride is a villain with a thousand faces. Those faces often entice us to pack our schedules unnecessarily. Faces like:

  • people-pleasing
  • pats on the back
  • possessions
  • proving ourselves
  • poor planning
  • perfectionism
  • posting

To help us consider how pride is impacting our schedules, the author posed this pointed question:

Am I trying to do good or am I trying to make myself look good?

Homework Assignment

For your homework this week, we want you to take some time to wrestle with how pride is impacting your schedule. Here are some specifics:

  • Carve out thirty minutes to an hour to be with the Lord.
  • Pull out the list of everything you're involved in that you made in week one. (Or create a new one.)
  • Pray and ask the Lord for wisdom.
  • Then ask, "Am I trying to do good or am I trying to make myself look good?
