Once when I was traveling home from a speaking engagement, I sat on the plane with a college-aged girl who was flying to meet her dad for the first time ever. Our flight was drastically delayed, so we ended up getting to know each other. She'd been raised by a lesbian couple ... and she had no tolerance for Christians. She and her moms had been treated so horribly by so many that they could not possibly see God's love through the clutter. In fact, one of her moms had been shot in the leg by a Christian who wanted to "send her a message." That breaks my heart.
I have a friend named Rachel. She is a Christian who struggled for years with same-sex attraction. Rachel says that when she starts working with a teen who is struggling with same sex attraction, she refuses to let her use labels. Don't let the gay/lesbian/bi-sexual/transsexual movement slap a label on you. And don't let Christians who judge your struggle to be greater than something they might be struggling with slap a label on you either.
The Christian response to homosexuality has been splintered at best. Some preach acceptance and others rally on behalf of gay marriage and homosexual clergy. Others picket and press God's law into the faces of the struggling.
The first thing I want to say to you if you are struggling with lesbianism is this: I'm so sorry for the way the Church has made you feel. Your sin is not a "worse" sin. It is a different sin. And it does not exclude you from your position in the body of Christ. You do not have to decide if you are a Christian or if you are struggling with same-sex attraction. If you embrace Jesus as Savior, you are a Christian and Jesus would welcome you with open arms and risk alienation along with you in order to help you find your way back into truth. He loves you and longs for you to walk in freedom. And I have wonderful news. You can. Just like Rachel.
You are not gay.
You are a daughter of Christ. Struggling with same-sex attraction is a symptom of life lived in a fallen world.
Stop labeling yourself.
I realize some of you will struggle with what I've just written. Especially those who haven never fought a battle with an addiction or recurring, habitual sin. So think before you write today. Think hard, and make sure you defend what you think with what God's Word says is truth.
