Summer is winding down and so is our LYWB Summer Book Club (sigh). Check out the final video update below, and then keep reading to make sure you understand the gospel.
The One and Only
Paul was writing to the church in Galatia (much like I am writing to you) when he said, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ” (Gal. 1:6–7). I love how Paul catches himself mid-thought. He starts cautioning the Galatians against believing another gospel and then he stops dead in his tracks . . . “Not that there is another one!” There’s only one gospel, and this is it.
-
- We are sinners.
- Christ is our Savior.
- Through Him and only Him, we are released from the punishment of sin and free to spend eternity with our Creator.
Here’s how pastor Tim Keller describes the gospel:
The “gospel” is the good news that through Christ the power of God’s kingdom has entered history to renew the whole world. When we believe and rely on Jesus’ work and record (rather than ours) for our relationship to God, that kingdom power comes upon us and begins to work through us.
And pastor John Piper sums the gospel up in a single sentence:
The gospel is the news that Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over all his enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy.
This is huge! No wonder it changes everything. We didn’t want to wrap up our Summer Book Club without making sure you understand the one and only gospel. It truly changes everything. If you haven’t yet snagged a copy of This Changes Everything by Jaquelle Crowe, follow this link to do so ASAP! We’ve loved spending our summer with you.
