I’m listening to the heavy summer rain falling on the tin roof and wondering why it evokes such cozy feelings. Perhaps it comes from knowing I’m protected from the outside environment (although I do enjoy walking in the rain at times) or maybe it’s the soothing sound (like an invitation to a nap?). The added rumble of thunder–without the threat of a lightning storm–only adds to the afternoon drama. I’m not exactly sure why this is one of my favorite things–I just know I enjoy it and it causes me to pause and worship.
The pools collecting outside my door remind me of a Scripture I marked in my reading this morning:
He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters; He makes the clouds His chariot; He walks upon the wings of the wind . . .
He waters the mountains from His upper chambers; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works. He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the labor of man, so that he may bring forth food from the earth . . .
O Lord, how many are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all . . .
Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord! (Psalm 104)
Watching the rain triggers the thought that, perhaps there was a farmer praying for rain today or cattle vainly looking for grass in a field that needed watering. I’m thankful that my heavenly Father watches over His creation. And when He sends the rain, the sunshine, the frost, or the drought–He has purpose. I lift up a prayer of gratitude.
Common, every-day events are opportunities to pause and worship. I encourage you to look for God’s movements in the ordinary occurrences you encounter. This will require you to slow down, be alert, open your eyes, and listen. Look for God in the familiar. Don’t miss His amazing activity.
