She called while I was catching a few rich words from John Piper via the Internet. “Am I interrupting anything? Are you busy?” She approached cautiously not wanting to steal my time. “I just wanted you to know before you hear it from anyone else . . . It’s a boy!”
I’m sure my scream took the phone from her ear. I’d asked for a boy. They’d long wanted a boy and thought their child birthing years were past. A boy. A good gift from the faithful Father. But that wasn’t her only news. Pre-cancerous cells on her back.
I listened long as she flooded my ears with words of trust and sweet surrender. “I only want God to be glorified. I trust Him no matter what. I’m not worried.” She was expressing her honest surrender to His will.
Listening, my mind returned to one of my first conversations with her. A striking beauty in her early twenties, finishing her college degree while living with her boyfriend, she didn’t yet know Jesus. When I simply shared the gospel, she received. She moved out because she understood loving Jesus meant obedience. She surrendered her will for His.
Today she still walks in that surrender. Embracing His will no matter the outcome. Praising Him for the boy growing in her womb while peacefully waiting for the surgeon’s next move. This is the kind of response that glorifies the Father. This is the surrender that allows others to see the reality of the gospel.
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself up for me” (Galatians 2:20).
How are you living out the surrendered life today?
