A Desire to Please

May 18, 2024 Portia Collins

“You can see with your own eyes that the Lord handed you over to me today . . . but I took pity on you and said: I won’t lift my hand against my lord, since he is the Lord’s anointed.” —1 Samuel 24:10

Most people would look at David and say he was stupid for not killing Saul when he had the opportunity. And I’m sure many would consider him even crazier for honoring Saul in his death through song in 2 Samuel 1:19–27.

But I think David’s actions are to be commended not because of mere integrity but because they are a testament to his desire to please God. David’s love for God was far greater than any hatred he could muster against Saul.

Submission and obedience to God will often look utterly foolish to the worldly. People may ridicule you, think less of you, or even try to take advantage of you because they assume you’re gullible. Continue to be obedient and submissive to God anyway! May God be pleased not just with our actions but with the posture of our hearts in honoring Him.
