A Necessary Practice

November 18, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Come, let’s shout joyfully to the Lord, shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation! Let’s enter his presence with thanksgiving; let’s shout triumphantly to him in song. —Psalm 95:1–2

Gratitude is often looked on as a lesser necessity in the Christian life. I disagree with that line of thinking entirely. But many of those who do value gratitude as an essential nutrient in growing one’s Christian character may still consider it a mostly mental exercise. Primarily spiritual. More up-in-the-air than down-to-earth.

But I’m here to tell you that expressing true gratitude involves choices as practical as setting your clocks correctly, changing your vacuum bag, or making sure that you’ve locked your doors at night. It is a regular maintenance plan, something that only happens when you do it on purpose, yet it is sure to save you all kinds of trouble down the line. It’s most definitely hard work. But it works.

And we grow more like Christ every time we practice it.
