She gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. — Luke 2:7
In December, the multitude of Christmas activities begins—parties, shopping, programs, etc. Although this should be the most beautiful time of the year, we can lose focus on a day- to-day basis of what we’re celebrating.
Several years ago, my son wanted to know why Jesus was in a manger among the animals. I explained that all the inns were occupied and there was no room for Him.
I think that’s what happens to us. We work so hard celebrating Jesus’ birth that we forget to give Him a place in our hearts. We often prepare to receive people at home, but we’re not so diligent to set aside a moment alone with Him.
During the holidays, I often struggle to keep a balanced level of activities so that my soul isn’t agitated and I can seek God in tranquility. The celebrations will pass, but our time of intimacy with the Lord will bring results for eternity.
