She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle. —Proverbs 31:27
One of the things that strikes me most about the “virtuous woman” of Proverbs 31 is the fact that she is so utterly selfless. She isn’t focused on advancing her career or being known for her personal accomplishments. To the contrary, she seems unconcerned about her own interests, choosing instead to concentrate on how she can meet the practical needs of her family as well as others around her.
She doesn’t sit around worrying about the future. Instead she’s secure and content. Her husband remains staunchly faithful to her. When he’s not reminding her that she’s “one in
a million” or bragging about her, her children are said to be honoring and praising her. Who wouldn’t be overjoyed to have the same rewards?
But how did she attain all these benefits? By choosing the pathway of servanthood—by making the needs of her family her chief priority, second only to her relationship with God.
We are never more like Jesus than when we’re serving Him and others. There’s no higher calling than to be a servant.
