So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. —Daniel 6:16
Of all the stories in Daniel that have been captured in the watercolors of our childhood memories, the story of “Daniel and the Lions’ Den” is almost surely the most beloved, the one we can most easily recall. But that story is not just for the children’s Bible storybooks, there to be told and retold at a certain distance with a certain suspension of reality, having known the ending so well for so many years. ]
The lions’ den is a tale for grown-ups too—for us who’ve been told much in Scripture about the way things will end, how God will ultimately make visible His rule over heaven and earth. But here in the middle of it, in the meantime, in the now-but-not yet, what are we to do? What will He require us to go through?
We don’t always know—except that we’re to be faithful, prayerful, and watchful. This is Daniel’s example to us.
