“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” —John 15:4 ESV
In the Old Testament, God says to cling to Him. Here in the New Testament, Jesus says to abide in Him. . . . God desired from the beginning that . . . we would dwell in intimate relationship with Him. Jesus, God in flesh, prayed that we would be one with Him and with the Father. . . .
Before we knew God, He knew us. He was already moving toward us, pursuing us. Had already loved us. . . . He sent His Son, and then sent His Spirit. He’s made it possible for us to be in Him, and He in us. He’s given us everything we need to cling.
We don’t have to wait for a programmed and packaged event. And we certainly don’t have to regard the idea of intimacy with God as foreign. By God’s grace, we can choose intimacy with Him daily, and it begins simply with getting to know Him.
