He stood and measured the earth; he looked and shook the nations; then the eternal mountains were scattered; the everlasting hills sank low. —Habakkuk 3:6 ESV
Though nations and those who rule them may think they are invincible, God would prove them otherwise. They can be shaken. If the “eternal” mountains can be removed (“eternal” because they were formed at creation), then surely the nations have an expiration date—if God so wills it.
The book of Hebrews describes the frightening force of God’s voice when He warned His chosen people who had gathered at the foot of the mountain to obey and worship Him alone. The ground shook as He spoke—a display of His power that was for them but could also be against them.
The scriptures go on to say, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens . . . so that what is not shaken might remain” in reference to the kingdom of God (Heb. 12:26–27). After this shaking only the truly eternal will remain—God, His kingdom, and those who are citizens of it.
