You were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you previously walked. —Ephesians 2:1–2
We are accustomed to language that makes us feel good about ourselves, however we’re living our lives. Any notion of judgment and hell is dismissed as folly, or perhaps reserved for the few we deem especially wicked. For the rest, heaven is the automatic destination. . . .
The truth is this: none of us would spend eternity in heaven if left to ourselves. Heaven is not simply the next destination, where we get to hang out and enjoy everything we want to do . . . Heaven is all about God, and days are filled with worship and praise and enjoying His presence.
Because God is holy, there is no human way anyone, bearing the stain of sin, could show up in heaven and dwell in His presence. But God made a way, and only one way—the cross, Jesus. From the beginning, God had a plan to save us. He knew we couldn’t save ourselves. . . . So He sent His Son to die for us. This is amazing! This is love.
