I, Nebuchadnezzar . . . had a dream, and it frightened me. —Daniel 4:4–5
Flush with success and renowned for his accomplishments, Nebuchadnezzar, the reigning monarch, experienced a distressing dream. Yet he didn’t know what it meant until he consulted Daniel.
In the dream, Nebuchadnezzar saw a huge tree—a visual image of himself, the most powerful world figure at the time. But an angel ordered that the tree be cut down, leaving nothing but the stump and its roots—a shocking blow to the king’s might. Worse, the angel described him descending into madness (Dan. 4:14–16).
The dream’s events took place just as Daniel had interpreted. What a comedown—from universal acclaim to utter humiliation. Why? “This is so that the living will know that the Most High is ruler” (v. 17).
Or, as Daniel had declared when explaining the meaning of the dream to the king, “Your kingdom will be restored to you as soon as you acknowledge that Heaven rules” (v. 26).
Yes, the sooner we know and believe this truth, the saner we all can be.
