An Invitation to Surrender

April 10, 2025 Shannon Popkin

The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. —Genesis 3:6

Do you ever become consumed with the idea that you’ve got to do something? That it’s up to you to make everything turn out right? Perhaps your desire for control erupts in angry outbursts, anxious pacing, incessant perfectionism, or seething manipulation.

Eve was the first to think it was up to her to decide what needed to be done and to do it. She was the first to be consumed with desire to make everything turn out right—and then to realize she had made everything turn out wrong.

I think we all start out reaching for whatever fruit looks good, living Eve’s story, and rejecting God’s rule in our lives. Then Jesus comes to us, saying, “Aren’t you exhausted trying to control it all? Won’t you turn in repentance?”

Jesus invites us to turn from Eve’s story back to God, acknowledging that He is God and we are not. He invites us to surrender.
