Awestruck by God’s Holiness

I tremble in awe of you; I fear your judgments. —Psalm 119:120

I find a great deal of conviction in verse 120. It is my earnest prayer that God will mold my heart in a fashion that means it is always growing in reverence and awe of him. The final verse in this section [of Psalm 119] shows us the proper response to God’s judgment. The psalmist does not respond to God’s executed righteousness against evildoers flippantly or nonchalantly or self-righteously. Instead, he expresses reverential fear of God: a reverence so intense that he describes his flesh as trembling.

The Hebrew word here means to have goose flesh. Can you imagine having a response to God that is so intense that you develop actual goosebumps? God’s posture toward the wicked prompts the psalmist to be all the more careful in his approach with God. Consider God’s judgment against the wicked, and you will be prompted to a repentance that will result in a life of obedience. 1
