Older women are to . . . teach what is good. —Titus 2:3
In the book of Titus, Paul instructed Titus on how to confront the culture around him and enlighten it with the gospel. He was to teach the sound doctrine of God’s Word to everyone in the congregation and to show them how to adorn the gospel so they would shine as lights amid that culture.
To the women, he gave a specific charge. They were to cultivate a godly, sober, and prudent character with a testimony of a life of good works. They were to instruct the younger women with a very particular curriculum, teaching them to value and love home life, learning to love their husbands and children well.
I believe that culture has influenced the church more than the church has influenced culture because we don’t adhere to God’s methods of spreading the fragrance of the gospel. Just as Paul encouraged Titus, we must insist on these teachings (Titus 3:8) so that all who have put their trust in the Lord will model the beauty of His calling.
