Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. —1 Peter 3:4 ESV
According to 1 Peter 3, the disposition of a truly beautiful woman is gentle, quiet, and amenable (that is, agreeable, submissive, honoring proper authority). At the same time, a true woman is determined to do what’s good and right and not give in to fear. She isn’t swayed by popular opinion or intimidated by what others might say or do.
A godly woman’s soft responsiveness is coupled with an uncompromising determination to respond appropriately—to say yes to the right things and no to the wrong things.
Our culture would have us believe that a soft womanly disposition is wimpy and repugnant— that we lose our personalities and personal identities and become weak, cowering doormats by embracing it. But a closer examination of the meaning of gentleness, quietness, and amenability demonstrates that this isn’t the case at all. As we begin to understand and live it out, the power and beauty of this womanly disposition becomes increasingly clear.

Make it Personal
Think of someone you know who has lived out the description of womanhood in 1 Peter 3. How has her life affected those around her?
