In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. —Psalm 4:8
Psalm 4 may well be a prayer that David prayed before he went to sleep. Notice that even though he’s in the midst of stressful circumstances, his spirit is serene as he directs his thoughts heavenward.
There are other prayers in Psalms that I can imagine David voicing to God just before his eyes closed in sleep. For example:
As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness. (Ps. 17:15)
Before falling asleep, you may want to pray something like this: “Father, by Your Spirit, please minister to my spirit through the night. As I sleep, fill my subconscious mind with thoughts of Jesus. And may I awake beholding His likeness—thinking of and loving Him, satis- fied with You and prepared to seek Your face.”
Make it Personal
Tonight, before you go to sleep, pray something similar to the above prayer or use your own words to direct your thoughts heavenward.
