I will show you a still more excellent way. —1 Corinthians 12:31
At the end of 1 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul gives a teaser of sorts. He tells the church in Corinth that he will show them a “more excellent way” of living as the Body of Christ.
What is that way? The answer is love.
If we’re walking in the way of love, we’re going to speak well of other servants of God. We’re not going to be critical with our tongues; instead, we’re to speak words of commendation and affirmation about God’s servants.
If we’re walking in the way of love, we’re going to be willing to yield our rights rather than claiming our rights. We’re willing even to suffer, if need be, so that the gospel will not be hindered or thought of poorly by others.
Jesus said that love is one of the hallmarks of a Christian: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). When we exhibit true agape love, we are a walking advertisement of the love of God.
