When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. —Proverbs 11:2 ESV
Pride, in whatever form it takes, is an enemy of Heaven’s rule because it keeps us from acknowledging or even seeing the truth about ourselves and God. Pride can keep us from seeing that everything we possess has been given to us by God, that God is the sovereign, supreme power of the world and we are dependent on Him for our very breath, and that the One who raises us up can just as easily bring us down.
Not only does pride deprive us of the comfort and courage we’re meant to receive from living under Heaven’s rule, it also inevitably sets us up for a fall because Heaven rules whether we acknowledge it or not.
God doesn’t rule because we’ve granted Him permission to do so. He rules simply because of who He is. Certain details might be up for discussion, but His sovereignty is not up for a vote. The only thing to be determined is how we adjust our lives to it: whether with blinding pride or with eye-opening humility.
