“If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God.” —1 Samuel 25:29 ESV
These words from Abigail contain a word picture that captures the idea of taking one’s valuables and wrapping them up in a bundle to keep them safe.
Abigail was familiar with hardship. Trapped in a difficult marriage, she at least knew her inner person was safe. No matter what anyone could do to her, she was confident her life was bundled up in the life of the Lord. It was out of this secure position that she was able to encourage David.
This obviously doesn’t mean a woman in a physically threatening situation must sit there and take anything another person wants to dish out. But it does mean that whatever unsafe or uncomfortable conditions you find yourself living in, you still have a sure refuge and fortress if you’re a child of God. By grace, through faith, you can take comfort in the “bundled” mentality that describes your secure position in Christ.
