So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. —Hebrews 10:35
Sometimes God warns us that what’s coming will challenge our faith to new measures (think of Habakkuk receiving news of the coming invasion or of Christ praying in the garden before His arrest). If ever we need to be reacquainted with God’s power, it’s when He gives us a peek at some hard journey that lies ahead.
Habakkuk had been questioning God’s plan. (Who wouldn’t, given the situation?) Jesus—in His humanity—had been praying for another way. Both came to acceptance, acknowledging that the Father always knows what He’s doing and that it will ultimately prove to be good.
One of the things faith will do for us, as it did for Habakkuk and Jesus, is change our context. It will expand our view. Jesus “for the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross” (Heb. 12:2). He saw beyond—a view which did not bypass the pain of the cross but hoped in the glory beyond it.
