In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. —Luke 1:39–40
Elizabeth was six months pregnant when Mary arrived, newly carrying the Savior in her womb. Mary stayed for three months.
Two women. One old, one young. One married, one engaged. One in the final trimester of pregnancy, one just beginning to experience morning sickness.
Yet both women experienced both disappointment and the unmerited favor of the Lord. Elizabeth’s faithfulness to God, regardless of circumstances, left an unquestionable mark on her husband, her son, and Mary. God used Elizabeth to encourage Mary in her faith.
As you face disappointments, you have a choice. You can face challenges kicking and screaming, questioning God’s sovereignty and goodness, or you can let God be God and say “yes” to His work in your life. Both choices make an impact. When we choose to respond like Elizabeth, we become a channel of blessing to others around us.
