Don’t Seek Them

I do not get involved with things too great or too wondrous for me. —Psalm 131:1

When David says he won’t worry about “things too great and too wondrous,” he means he’s not going to expend needless energy trying to figure out things that can’t be figured out—things that are beyond the bounds of human understanding.

There are some things that are just mysteries. Sometimes we spend a lot of needless emo- tional and mental energy, time, and frustration trying to plumb the depths of something we’ll never understand.

It may be in the way of our trying to have personal ambition, trying to concern ourselves with things that are too high for us. As the prophet Jeremiah said to Baruch, “Do you pursue great things for yourself? Stop pursuing!” (Jer. 45:5).

Do you feel underappreciated at work, home, or church, like you’re not being allowed to use your gifts? Are you seeking great things for yourself? You’ll never have a quiet heart as long as you are. Instead, let God place you where He wants to use you and serve in a way that’s pleasing to Him.
