We love because he first loved us. —1 John 4:19
Several years ago, I spent a lot of time studying 1 Corinthians 13, known as the love chapter of the Bible. I’d usually come away from these times feeling like such a failure. I knew there was no way I’d ever be able to love the way this passage describes.
But there is a way to develop the love of God in our lives. The first key is to realize we’ll never have it on our own. We’ll never naturally have
a selfless kind of love—the kind that gives to others without expecting anything in return. The way to get that love is to confess our deficiency to God and ask Him to fill us with Himself.
We must be willing to be emptied of ourselves, because naturally every one of us is born selfish. But when Jesus comes in and fills our hearts with His love, then we find we’re able to love in the same selfless, sacrificial, and serving way that He did.
True love begins once we start seeking Him.
