Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. —1 Peter 3:9 ESV
God often chooses to leave behind some of our painful memories, the lingering effects of past hurts. Why would He do that? So we can be merciful and compassionate toward those who are going through similar ordeals. This is actually a great privilege bestowed upon us by a God more loving than many expect Him to be, who has never met a circumstance so dreadful that it can’t be recast into a trophy of His mercy and grace.
However, I don’t believe that you should have to live the rest of your life under the weight and burden of these unresolved emotions. And the reason many of us are still there, the reason we haven’t yet moved on to more complete healing, is because we’ve stopped short of blessing those who have wronged us.
We need to go on. We need to finish what God has started. For our good. For their good. For God’s glory.
