“But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.” —Revelation 2:4
The same motivation that causes us to partition parts of our home from visitors can also make us want to board up sections of our lives from God. Yet no barrier can keep Him from seeing inside our hearts, just as He saw into the inner recesses of a hardworking, long-suffering church in Ephesus.
For even with their enduring and industrious reputation, they had neglected one important area. Yes, they served God, but they were no longer doing so out of true love for God or others.
We may make a good impression when it comes to doctrinal soundness and dutiful service. People may say nice things about the nice “decorating choices” we’ve made. Yet our house stands in a “fallen” condition unless we “repent” and take time to rekindle our “first love” for Christ.
Of all the rooms you keep spruced up, make sure your love for Christ never grows cluttered. And remember that the interior rooms of your heart are never out of view of the all-seeing, all-knowing eyes of Christ.
Make it Personal
Ask God to show you what He sees as He examines your heart. Is your service motivated by pure, devoted love for Jesus?
