Flood of Gratitude

November 1, 2023 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Overflowing with gratitude. —Colossians 2:7

Paul’s exhortation to Colossians has the idea of a river overflowing its banks. Except this flood flows forth as a steady stream of blessing. A flood of gratitude.

I frequently see this “gracious flood” among my coworkers. Many live on an income considered inadequate by today’s standards. And yet these grateful servants of God excel in the grace of giving, meeting each other’s needs for everything from clothing to fresh vegetables to auto repairs.

How might it work in your own life? Imagine your gratitude for God’s grace causing you to reach out in practical ways to the people you know. Imagine the impact in a world characterized by selfishness if we were to adorn the gospel we profess by living it out through mutual care, generosity, and sacrifice.

That’s what can happen when God’s grace becomes real in our lives, when our first response to any situation is to be grateful both to God and others. Gratitude has a way of abounding and overflowing—not only being received and deposited but daily withdrawn and multiplied.
