But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. —James 1:22
I’ve often said over the years that if I could only share one message with women, it would be about the importance of having a daily devotional life. But the point isn’t to just read God’s Word; the point is to meet with God and have your life changed as a result.
The old-time evangelist Gipsy Smith said it like this: “What makes the difference is not how many times you have been through the Bible, but how many times the Bible has been through you.”
We can read all we want, but if God’s Word isn’t changing us, it’s not doing much good. James makes the same point when he says, “But be doers of the word and not hearers only” (1:22).
As you spend time reading and studying God’s Word, think through how you need to respond. Here are some questions to ask:
-
How does this truth apply to my situation?
-
What is a practical step I can take to apply this truth?
-
Do any changes need to be made in my life?
Make it Personal
As you read the Bible today, ask yourself the questions above and pray that His Word will truly “go through” your life.
