“Why do you spend silver on what is not food, and your wages on what does not satisfy?” —Isaiah 55:2
We’ve been created to live in communion with God, and prayer is one of the ways He’s given us to satisfy that need. But instead of running to His throne, I sometimes run to substitutes that provide me with a false sense of connection. Instead of bending my knees, I bow my head and “medicate” myself with a dose of social media.
How can I desire God if I’m indulging my appetite with what doesn’t satisfy? When I don’t feel like praying, I need to ask: Am I feeding my soul with substitutes that diminish my passion for God?
While I’d like to offer a formula that will guarantee your desire for prayer returns, there’s nothing mystical that can help. The solution for a heart that has no desire to pray is to pray.
If all you can say is “Lord, help me,” let that be your prayer. Cry out to Him with a sincere heart. The Holy Spirit intercedes for you when you don’t know what to pray (Rom. 8:26).
