“Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.” —Matthew 13:8–9 ESV
Jesus often landed His teaching on the words, “he who has ears, let him hear.” There’s a bit of a sting, a sinless sarcasm if you will, to this statement. All His listeners had ears but not all actually listened. They heard, and perhaps even considered His words, trying to decide if His teachings were worthy of obedience. Sadly though, many of these well-eared people rejected His teaching; they rejected Him.
While we may be tempted to look down on those who walked away from the life Christ offered, perhaps we should ask, Do I still have ears that hear? Do I listen to Christ?
Hearing Him is more than going to church, listening to sermons, reading the Scriptures. All of these are good practices and helpful to our growth in Christ. But of what value is hearing—or reading or thinking or talking about—the teachings of the Bible if we’re not listening, if we’re not doing? If we’re not trusting and obeying?
