How God’s Word Affects Our Prayers

September 5, 2024 Betsy Gómez

“Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” —Matthew 26:41

Have you experienced stages in your Christian life when you have no desire to pray? You know you need to pray, but everything else seems more urgent.

I’ve been there. Yet I’ve realized that my appetite for prayer is directly tied to my diet of God’s Word. My deceitful heart needs to be reminded with the truth constantly. I need to remember that I am a sinner in desperate need of grace, to remember what Christ has done for me and the truth about my identity. I need to recognize who is on the throne of my life and what my mission is as a disciple of Christ.

The Word of God is a mirror that points me to my need to run to the throne of grace in search of the supernatural help that God has provided through prayer. When I don’t expose myself to the truth of Scripture, my heart easily deceives me.
