Humble Jesus

March 25, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

When he had come as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross. —Philippians 2:7–8

Why was Jesus humble? We would expect Him to act with integrity, of course, to not mistreat people, to be kind, to show generosity, to be patient, generous, and to lead a life of virtue. These are behaviors we’d hope for in the Messiah. But humble? Wouldn’t we want God-in-the-flesh to be a little more dynamic? Wouldn’t it be better for the citizens of the world to see heaven’s power on display?

We did see it, just not in the way we might have expected. Heaven’s power came to us embodied in humility, which is seen in both what Christ set aside and in what He took on. He willingly laid aside His privileges as God to dwell among those who were at enmity with Him. How amazing!

God in the flesh. Always submitted to the Father’s will. Seeking followers among the forsaken. Looking for the overlooked. Forgiving His haters. This is our humble Savior. How amazing!
