Humility at Work

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. —James 4:10

Humility is how we appropriate the full blessings and real-time benefits of Heaven’s rule. It’s the doorway God uses to overwhelm us with the gifts of His comfort and courage.

I think that’s part of what Jesus was talking about in Luke 21:12: “You will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.” His followers in the first century would find them- selves in places where a person who craves control will feel undone, places where those whose pride feeds on approval will want to say whatever makes them look good. But “make up your minds not to prepare your defense ahead of time,” Jesus instructed, “for I will give you such words and a wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict” (vv. 14–15).

What Jesus was describing is a “Heaven rules” moment as well as a humility moment—not thinking too much or too little of ourselves but simply not thinking of ourselves, thinking only of how God is ruling over us and over every situation we encounter.

Make it Personal

How can we foster a proper view of ourselves—not too high or too low?
