It Won’t Last Forever

“After you, there will arise another kingdom.” —Daniel 2:39

Nebuchadnezzar ruled for more than forty years after Daniel interpreted his dream, during which time it was easy for a man of his pride and self-importance to believe he might go on being king forever. But that just wasn’t true.

Babylon would eventually be conquered and displaced by the Medo-Persians, who would fall to the Greeks, who would fall to the Romans. But the king’s dream also contained a final, dramatic component, which is probably what frightened him the most. Daniel recounted it this way: “The iron, the fired clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were shattered and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors. The wind carried them away, and not a trace of them could be found” (Dan. 2:35).

Here we see graphically depicted the certain future of all human systems, rule, and pride— all those powerful earthly kingdoms crushed, shattered, their dust blown away by the wind, until there is nothing left of them.

God raises up leaders in specific times and places, for His eternal purposes. But no human will reign forever.
