All who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” —Luke 1:66
The circumstances surrounding John the Baptist’s birth were so remarkable that onlookers wondered, “What then will this child be?”
The answer unfolds in Luke 3. John would be a mouthpiece for the message of Christ. Because his parents waited for him for so long and served the Lord faithfully, when John spoke people were ready to listen. Elizabeth couldn’t have known this during those years when she waited for a child. But she did know that God was worthy of her devotion.
Beyond Luke 1, Elizabeth is never mentioned again in the Bible. What became of her? We don’t know, and it doesn’t matter. Her goal in life was to point people to God—for His purposes to be fulfilled. She had fulfilled her purpose by giving birth to a son, who was then given back to God. Her life reminds us that it’s not about us; it’s all about Him. This is the heart attitude of those God has used throughout history to make Jesus known to our world.
