“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego . . . risked their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.” —Daniel 3:28
The most obvious rationale for why Daniel 3 ends with Nebuchadnezzar praising God is that he’d just seen three men thrown into the furnace and emerge unscathed. But I believe it was the whole day’s events. It was the daring courage of three men who would bow their knee to God, and only to God. It was the way they spoke to the king: God will save us or He won’t, but He is God either way.
And it was the “fourth” Man in the flames. This individual was surely the “Son of God”—Jesus Himself who responds to our faith by coming into our furnace, absorbing the judgment made against us, ministering to our hearts, and walking with us through the fire.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had no guarantee they would escape the fire. Neither do we. But whatever the result, Jesus will be there ahead of us, either to rescue us or to take us to glory with Him. It’s a testimony either way.
