God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8
Sometimes it’s easy to give to meet the needs of another person, but I find I often have a secret desire for that love to be reciprocated. I’m serving so that person will love me in return. Yet genuine love is giving myself totally for the benefit of another person without expecting to get anything back.
Ultimately, true love isn’t a feeling. Rather it’s a determined act of my will. That kind of love always results in determined acts of self-giving. The supreme example of agape love is God’s love for us. We have a God who loved us not because we deserved it or because He found anything desirable in us but just because He is love.
When we were powerless to do anything for Him, when we were His enemies, He loved us and demonstrated that love in the supreme act of self-sacrifice (John 3:16). When Jesus came to this earth in the form of a man, He came to help us see the love of God.
