Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life. —Proverbs 4:23
Often, we hear the phrase, “Everything in moderation.” While there’s wisdom in learning to enjoy simple pleasures like a donut or the occasional soda while not overindulging, there’s a subtle snare in applying this principle universally. Specifically, we must guard ourselves diligently against the thought that we can sin “just a little” and everything will be all right.
Sin can never exist in moderation. What begins as a tiny spark will eventually wholly consume us. When we blur the lines between right and wrong, we quickly find ourselves further from the path of righteousness than we imagined or perhaps intended. And when we foolishly adopt a “little bit of sin” mindset, we ultimately dull our spiritual discernment, lose our zeal for holiness, and leave ourselves open to Satan’s work.
Be intentional about staying away from anything or anyone that leads you to be more passive toward sin. Those sins that you think you’re enjoying “moderately” might be the very things that are separating you from enjoying a beautiful, blessed, and peaceful relationship with God.
