No One on the Sidelines

Serve one another through love. —Galatians 5:13

You may be convinced you’re too busy for mentoring, no matter how important the idea sounds. You just can’t imagine how to fit it in to an already overcrowded life.

But this generational sharing of life is a basic requirement of the Christian lifestyle. It’s among the “one anothers” of Scripture—loving one another, serving one another, bearing one another’s burdens. I can’t underscore enough how vital this is.

And keep in mind that “older” and “younger” are relative terms. You may only be twenty-three, but you’re older than that sixteen-year-old in the youth group. How about approaching her as an older friend who cares enough to teach her what is good? Who knows what heartache the Lord might use you to help prevent in her life?

The roles of older woman—lovingly teaching what is good—and younger woman—humbly learning—are for all of us. They’re what Scripture calls us to. None of us belong on the sidelines.

Do you feel too busy to commit to a mentoring relationship? If so, which “less important things” would you be willing to give up?
