Depart from me, you evil ones, so that I may obey my God’s commands. —Psalm 119:115
Have you ever recoiled in fear when you knew you needed to speak out against or separate yourself from evil? It is always easier to live in fear of perceptions or persecution than to live in love with God’s law. We can learn from the psalmist’s position here. He is particularly concerned with separating himself from evildoers so that he may be better positioned to keep the commandments of God. Simply put, a little sin can spread throughout the entire body, so we must be careful of our association.
We cannot verbally affirm the existence of evil without examining how we are actually responding to the realities of it. There is no space for timidity or apathy as we war against iniquity and wickedness. . . . Let us make no room for sin or evil in our lives and always be mindful of those things and people that may hinder our communion with God. We have not been called to cowardice but to confidence in God’s ability.3
