You are my shelter and my shield; I put my hope in your word. —Psalm 119:114
Throughout the Bible, we find examples of God’s goodness and mercy in protecting his people from evil. Before David became king, he spent years fleeing from Israel’s first king. . . . At one point, David finds himself hiding in a cave from Saul. . . . Psalm 57 recounts David’s glorious praises to God from deep inside the cave. . . .
David’s praise was not contingent upon his present circumstances. He was able to rejoice and praise God in the midst of his suffering and persecution because his hope was in God. The sentiments of David in Psalm 57 are echoed here in Psalm 119:114. The psalmist finds protection from the evils of this world by fleeing to God. His hope is not in his own abilities or knowledge, but rather, in God’s word. We can also rest assured that God is our hiding place and shield. We cannot preserve ourselves from evil, internal or external—so how beautiful and comforting it is to know that we are covered and hidden in the Lord! 2
