Passing on the Word

In the same way, older women are . . . to teach what is good. —Titus 2:3

In his letter to Titus in the New Testament, the apostle Paul identifies several important characteristics about womanhood. One of those is discernment—to know and to uphold sound doctrine, to teach what is good. You can’t teach what is good if you don’t know what is good, so you’ve got to figure it out. That takes some intentionality. We need to have women who are grounded in doctrine, in knowing what the Word has to say.

If we don’t get that, then we’re just going to pass on this set of customs that our daughters are going to thumb their noses at. We don’t want to bequeath a way of life that’s simply cultural or because it’s the way we did it. We want to pass on the Word because the Word is what endures for generations. The Word allows us to be confident that we can talk about womanhood in a way that will be applicable to every culture, every time, and every place in the world throughout history.
